Hyderabad city police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the death of an 11-year-old boy who was burnt alive in an army garrison here.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Shahnawaz Qasim will lead the five-member team, Police Commissioner Mahender Reddy said Monday.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohammed Ghouse Moinuddion of the detective department, Inspectors L. Raja Venkat Reddy and S. Ravinder and Additional Inspector Khaleel Basha are the members of the SIT.

Sheikh Mustafuddin was found with critical burn injuries in Garrison 47th Infantry Battalion at Mehdipatnam Oct 8. In his dying declaration, he said armymen set him ablaze. The next day he died of his injuries at a hospital.

The incident evoked widespread condemnation with people abutting the garrison demanding immediate arrest of the culprits.

"In view of the sensitive nature of the case requiring sustained and focused investigation, SIT is constituted to undertake a thorough investigation and establish the circumstances leading to the incident and people responsible for the same," said a statement by the police commissioner.

The west zone police headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Satyanarayana will continue to be part of the investigation and render all required assistance in detecting the case and bringing the culprits to book at the earliest, it said.
