Snowfall unlikely in Kashmir over next six days

The weather office here said Tuesday that there is little chance of snowfall in the Kashmir Valley during the next six days.

"The weather is likely to remain mainly dry in the valley till Dec 30," said Sonam Lotus, director of the weather office here.

"We are not expecting any major change in the weather conditions during this period. A feeble Western Disturbance (WD) was earlier expected to bring in some rain and snow around Dec 27, but now we are expecting a decrease in precipitation during the next six days," he said.

Western Disturbance is a storm system originating in the Mediterranean Sea which brings sudden winter rain and snow to the northwestern parts of the Indian subcontinent, chiefly in the Himalayan region.

The night temperature was 0.6 degree Celsius in Srinagar Tuesday - three degrees above normal, while the minimum was minus 9.2 degrees in Gulmarg Tuesday, which is also three degrees below normal.

Pahalgam recorded minus 3.0 degrees - two degrees above normal, while Leh had a night temperature of minus 8.9 degrees Celsius.

At 7.8 degrees Celsius, the night temperature was a notch below normal in Jammu Tuesday, an official of the weather office said here.
