Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday condoled the passing away of renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Kishori Amonkar.
Gandhi in her message described Amonkar as "doyen of Hindustani Classical tradition".
"In her death the country has lost the most prominent exponent of Jaipur Gharana. Kishori ji will continue to live amongst us through her vast repertoire of Khayal, Thumri and Bhajans," Gandhi said extending her condolences to her family and admirers.
Amonkar, 84, passed away in Mumbai on Monday night after a brief illness.
In her singing career spanning seven decades, Amonkar was revered as 'Gaan-Saraswati'.
Belonging to the Jaipur Gharana, she was conferred the Padma Vibhushan and Sahitya Akademi Award among many others.
