Sony Pictures is in negotiations to produce and distribute a "Slender Man" movie, based on the supernatural character who stalks, abducts and traumatizes people.
Exclusive worldwide rights to the intellectual property "Slender Man" have been acquired by Mythology Entertainment in partnership with Madhouse Entertainment and It Is No Dream Entertainment for all platforms including motion picture, television, video games, publishing and more, reports The New York Times.
Slender Man is a tall, thin figure with unnaturally long arms and a featureless face. The figure first appeared on the internet in 2009 as a submission in a photoshop contest in which users were challenged to edit everyday photographs to appear paranormal.
A forum poster with the user name "Victor Surge" contributed two black and white images of groups of children and added a spectral figure wearing a black suit.
He wrote under one of the photographs: "He is thought to be responsible for the haunting, stalking, and disappearance of countless children and teens".
Sony's Screens Gems -- which specialises in genre fare -- is in negotiations to partner with Mythology, Madhouse, and It Is No Dream to produce and distribute a feature film and is targetting a fall production start. Producers plan to take the film's script, written by David Birke, out to directors soon.
Producers are Mythology Entertainment's Bradley Fischer, James Vanderbilt and William Sherak, Robyn Meisinger of Madhouse Entertainment and Sarah Snow of It Is No Dream Entertainment.
Mythology's executive vice president Tracey Nyberg will serve as the executive producer along with It Is No Dream's Louis Sallerson and Madhouse's Adam Kolbrenner and Ryan Cunningham.
