Sudan snaps military ties with North Korea

Sudan has snapped military ties with North Korea in line with international sanctions against the latter for its missile and nuclear weapons programme, the South Korean Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

Visiting Sudanese Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ghandour said in Seoul that his country has completely broken off military co-operations with North Korea and has no plans for high-level exchanges, Efe news agency reported citing a South Korean Foreign Ministry statement.

Ghandour said Sudan is working with other African countries to step up pressure on North Korea in strict compliance with the UN Security Council's Resolution 2270, which was promulgated in March 2016 following Kim Jong-un's latest nuclear and missile tests.

The resolution, brought in after Pyongyang conducted its fourth nuclear test and third space rocket launch in early 2016, imposes tough trade sanctions against North Korea with a view to choke off its economy and force it to give up its weapons programmes.

On September 9, North Korea carried out a fresh nuclear test triggering expectations of a tougher UN resolution.

Meanwhile, Seoul has kicked off a campaign to further isolate North Korea, which has only a handful of international allies, including several African nations.
