The death toll in the suicide bombing targeting a Shia congregation in Iraq's capital Baghdad on Saturday rose to 32 while the number of injured touched 60, a police official said.

"The latest report said that 32 persons were killed and about 60 injured in the suicide bomb attack at a mourning tent in Baghdad's northeastern neighbourhood of al-Shaab," Xinhua news agency quoted an official as saying.

The attack occurred at noon when a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest at a mourning tent in the crowded popular market of Shallal in the Shia neighbourhood of al-Shaab, the official said.

Earlier in the day, the official put the toll at 18 killed and 53 injured in the blast.

The Shia Ashura commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was killed in the seventh century during the battle of Karbala in Iraq.
