The condition of CPI-M leader Gautam Deb, who is down with swine flu, was stable, his doctor said on Thursday.

Deb, a former minister, was admitted to the critical care unit of a private hospital here on Tuesday morning, after he complained of respiratory distress.

According to his doctor Subhashis Chakrabarty, the medical reports for Thursday were "satisfactory".

"He is stable. His condition is being monitored continuously," Chakrabarty said, but ruled out immediate possibilities of discharge from the hospital.

Swine flu has claimed 23 lives in West Bengal since January and the number of positive cases has gone up to 358.
