Telangana MP seeks CBI probe into student's suicide

Another MP from Telangana on Sunday demanded a CBI probe into the alleged suicide by a girl student at Nagarjuna University in Andhra Pradesh.

R. Anand Bhaskar of the Congress met union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in Delhi to demand a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the suicide by M. Rishiteswari.

The Rajya Sabha member said only an inquiry by the CBI would bring out the truth.

The B.Arch first-year student allegedly committed suicide in her hostel room in the university campus on July 14.

The girl, hailing from Telangana's Warangal district, in a suicide note said she was taking the extreme step due to harassment by her seniors.

Three students, including a girl, named by Rishiteswari in her note have been arrested.

Telangana Rashtra Samithi MP K. Kavitha had earlier demanded a CBI probe into the circumstances which led to the girl's suicide.

Kavitha is a member of the Lok Sabha from Nizamabad and is the daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.

Meanwhile, a fact-finding committee constituted by the Andhra Pradesh government to probe the incident submitted its preliminary report to the government on Sunday.

The committee led by retired IAS officer S. Balasubramaniyam submitted the report to state Human Resource Development Minister Ganta Srinivas Rao.

The minister said action would be taken after receiving the full report of the panel.

He said since holidays were declared for the university, the committee was given another week to submit its full report.

The minister also said that since there was shortage of single-judge bench in the high court, the government ordered a probe by the fact finding committee.

Rishiteswari's parents said their daughter was not that weak to commit suicide, and demanded a probe by a sitting judge.

The girl's father Murali Krishna found fault with the university authorities for dissolving all caste-based student panels and for declaring holidays.
