A government official in Telangana committed suicide on Saturday, hours after he was caught red-handed while taking a bribe, police said.
The incident occurred in Nizamabad town when Venkateshwarlu, working as an engineer in the municipal corporation, jumped off his apartment. He was shifted to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed.
Earlier in the day, Anti-Corruption Bureau officials caught the engineer while taking a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a contractor. The officials had taken him to his house for further investigation when he jumped off from the building.
Tension prevailed at the hospital as municipal employees staged a sit-in. They alleged that negligence by the anti-corruption bureau officials led to the suicide.
Police have shifted the body for autopsy.
