The Tibetan administration-in-exile Friday congratulated BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi for his party's landslide victory in the Lok Sabha elections.
"I take this opportunity to thank the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for their unwavering support for the Tibetan people during its two full terms. I also congratulate the incoming National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government led by BJP," Tibetan prime minister-in-exile Lobsang Sangay said in a statement.
He said the people of India have strongly affirmed their democratic rights by setting a new benchmark with the highest ever voter turnout of 66.4 percent. "India is truly the largest democracy in the world. With unity in diversity as its core principles, India continues to practice vibrant democracy with development," he added.
Modi created history on his way to becoming India's prime minister as he led the BJP to a spectacular victory in a Lok Sabha battle that crushed the Congress and others ranged against him and gave, for the first time in 30 years, any party a majority in parliament on its own.
The Dalai Lama has lived in India since fleeing his homeland in 1959. The Tibetan administration-in-exile is based in this northern Indian hill town. It is not recognised by any government in the world.
