The Tibetan government-in-exile on Saturday celebrated India's 69th Independence Day and thanked the government and its people for their support.

Lobsang Sangay, the elected head of the Tibetan people, unfurling the Indian national flag at the Kashag Secretariat here.

"Warm greetings and happy Independence Day to our Indian brothers and sisters," Sangay, who donned traditional Tibetan attire at the flag-hoisting function, said in a statement.

Speaking to reporters, he said: "On behalf of the Tibetan administration, I would like to thank India and the people of India for their support."

Every year, the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), the democratically elected government-in-exile, holds functions at its headquarters to celebrate India's Independence Day and Republic Day functions.

India is currently home to around 100,000 Tibetans and the government-in-exile, which has never won recognition from any country.
