The Indian Army on Monday flagged off a trekking expedition to Siachen Glacier, the world's highest battlefield.

Colonel S.D. Goswami, spokesman of the army's Udhampur-headquartered northern command, told IANS: "The trekking expedition comprising of 45 civilian trekkers, including six females, was flagged off in a ceremony by GOC 14 Corps from Leh town of Ladakh region."

"The trek was preceded by kitting, initial training and acclimatization for seven days," he added.

"This trek will go a long way towards enhancement of mountaineering skills in civilians ably honed by the Indian Army," he concluded.
