A woman and her cousin from Manipur, both in their early 20s, were assaulted and misbehaved with by two people when they protested a racist comment, police said Saturday. Both the accused have been arrested.

The incident occurred at Vijay Nagar area near Delhi University's north campus Friday night.

The 24-year-old-woman is pursuing B.Ed from Delhi University and her cousin, a graduate, were returning to their home after having dinner. The two cousins hail from Manipur's Ukhrul district.

When they reached near a park in Buddha Colony area, a man who was urinating on the roadside passed a comment at them. They ignored him but he kept abusing them, a close friend of the victims told IANS.

"He also called them Nepali and Chinki. When they protested, the man started hitting the boy. He slapped him and also beat him up," he said.

The man did not stop at that and also tried to molest the woman in front of her cousin, he added.

The Manipuri youth called his friends but the attacker, along with a companion, fled the scene.

The two victims were taken to a hospital and later discharged after medical examination, said a police officer.

Many students from the northeast gathered at the spot. People pelted stones, following which 10 vehicles, including a police control room van, were damaged, the officer said.

Kamal, a motor mechanic, and his companion Manpreet, who stays in the same area, were arrested a few hours after the incident, police said.
