Designer Rick Roy who has painstakingly put together actress Vidya Balan's look in "Begum Jaan" says the National Award-winner is "extremely receptive to technicians".
"Vidya is extremely receptive when it comes to technicians. She gives people the freedom to try out styles. It's between the director's brief and the designer," Roy told IANS here at the set of "Begum Jaan".
"She is somebody who I have never had to sit and explain clothes to," Roy said.
The film is Srijit Mukherji's Bollywood directorial debut and is the Hindi adaptation of Mukherji's critically acclaimed Bengali film "Rajkahini", set against the backdrop of partition in Bengal. The adaptation features Punjab as the backdrop.
Expanding on the research for costumes, Roy who has worked with Sonam Kapoor in a song for "Players" and Malaika Arora Khan in "Housefull 2", said "Begum Jaan" is very different from what he has done so far.
"This is my first film with Vidya though I have known her for a long time. I have done basic research on clothes of that period in Punjab. Only cotton was there, so we used cotton but utilised crushed cotton as the camera catches that well," Roy said.
"Begum Jaan" stars Vidya in the title character. Its makers have also roped in Pallavi Sharda, Priyanka Setia, Flora Saini, Poonam Rajput, Ridhima Tiwari and Ravija Chauhan for the movie, which will even feature singer Ila Arun. The movie's plot runs around a brothel located in Punjab before India's Independence and how the Partition of 1947 affects it.
