The UPA is probably ruing the day it decided it wanted to allow the mercurial Mamata Banerjee into its fold. Didi has not learnt any lessons from Singur. If anything, she is more convinced of the correctness of her ways. The little chance that big projects had of being able to be set up has now been finished off forever. The policy of helping industry to buy land was a good one and ensured rehabilitation took place before the land was handed over. Didi has, however, forced the UPA to withdraw the bill. She will also ensure that no meaningful privatisation or a hike in fuel prices takes place. So why did the UPA split with Prakash Karat?
