Apropos Archis Mohan's report, "New certification norms soon: Jaitley" (June 11), whatever be the rules the government plans to implement, it would not be an easy task, given the frenzy surrounding religious or communal topics. This is borne out by each controversy in the history of the censor board. Decisions are best taken after consulting experts or representative voices in the field concerned.

There is a great need to effectively address the issues of pornography and violence in films, which may be a negative influence on society, particularly the youth.

In the name of creativity and poetic licence, film-makers are including scenes of explicit lovemaking and profanity in their movies. Juveniles are attributing their inspiration for committing rape, molestation and murder to movies. It may be too much to expect movies to be edifying, but at least they should not spoil the character of India's young citizens.

Also, given the immense influence and reach of movies, they may be granted certification only if they carry social or environmental messages on topics such as rainwater harvesting, energy conservation, plastic use reduction at the beginning of a film or during the interval.
