Letters: Singh, the scapegoat

This refers to Rahul Jacob's column "In defence of Manmohan Singh" (Caveat India, April 17). Manmohan Singh is one of India's greatest statesmen and politician with a clean and blameless image. The fact that he ran a government for 10 years with selfish and opportunistic coalition partners is a great achievement. Despite strong and nasty criticism from certain leaders and opposition parties, Singh has shown great restraint and never commented against any leader or politician. With his image, sincerity and vast knowledge, Singh would have delivered the goods if he was supported sincerely by his coalition partners. Another disadvantage for Singh was that he was always at the mercy of the Gandhi family for every small decision. It is wrong to blame him for the mistakes and dismal performance of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA). It is distressing to see the pathetic economic condition of a country led by a prime minister who is a noted economist. It is equally distressing to see a clean and corruption-free leader like Singh being made a scapegoat for the sins of the Congress. However, it is my sincere appeal that a talented and well-read person like Manmohan Singh should utilise his knowledge and vast experience for the benefit of the nation by remaining active in public life.
