Continuing its winning momentum in the run up to the ensuing assembly and Lok Sabha elections, the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) swept the urban polls for the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) and Baripada municipality, dealing a blow yet again to the aspirations of the Opposition.

The ruling BJD recorded a thumping victory, bagging 36 out of 59 wards of the CMC. The ruckus by the Opposition Congress and BJP over alleged loot of cyclone relief in Cuttack failed to translate into votes with the people throwing weight behind the BJD. The Odisha Jana Morcha (OJM) led by expelled BJD leader Pyari Mohan Mohapatra failed to grab even a single ward.Congress won nine seats of CMC while the BJP could muster only three seats, paving the way for BJD to elect the mayor.

The result of ward no 58 was not declared due to technical snag in the electronic voting machine (EVM).The outcome of Baripada municipality elections was even more disastrous for the Opposition parties as the BJD clocked a massive victory, bagging 21 out of 28 seats.
