Mishra represents the powerful Brahmin lobby in Uttar Pradesh. Mishra has been accommodated as a Minister in the Modi government. He, along with Lalji Tandon, was part of the BJP leadership in Uttar Pradesh that former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee nursed. Mishra was upset with Vajpayee for being asked to contest from Deoria; nonetheless, he won from that constituency.
Mishra became RSS pracharak for Gorakhpur after having finished his post-graduation in 1963. During the Emergency, he was arrested for 19 months. In 1978, he was elected a Rajya Sabha member; in 1979, he became the president of the Janata Yuva Morcha. After completing his Rajya Sabha term, Mishra returned to state politics. He was elected an MLA in 1983 and came into his own as the party’s organisation man in UP.
In 1991, Mishra, along with BJP leaders Kalyan Singh and Rajendra Kumar Gupta, helped the party form a government in Lucknow with full majority.
