The driver of the car lost control after one of its tyres burst, police said adding that divers were making efforts to locate those drowned in the mishap.
Three occupants of the car were pulled out by passers-by but the elderly woman among them died of shock after learning that her son has drowned, police said.
The passengers were from Thaska village in Haryana and Faizgarh village in Punjab.
Ranjit along with his wife Rupinder Kaur, son Sahilpreet and daughter Harsimran Kaur and their three relatives-- Sher Singh, Gurcharan Kaur, Dilbagh Singh left for Fatehgarh Sahib in the car.
As they reached near Sounda village, the car's tyre burst and it fell into the canal, police said.
Sher Singh, Ranjit Singh, Gurcharan Kaur were pulled out of the canal but Gurcharan died of shock, police said.
Efforts are on to trace the rest, police said.
