10 kg gold seized by DRI in Bengal, three arrested

Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Tuesday said it has seized 10 kilograms of gold, smuggled into the country through Indo-Myanmar border, and arrested three persons in connection with the case.

Acting on intelligence inputs, DRI officials intercepted a vehicle at a place near Siliguri in north Bengal on Monday and recovered around 10 kilograms of gold worth Rs 3.87 crore, a statement issued by the agency said.

The 60 pieces of gold biscuits of Myanmar origin were concealed in the two headrests of the middle seat of the vehicle, the statement added.

The agency also said the gold, smuggled into India through Indo-Myanmar border in Mizoram, was supposed to be delivered to someone in Kolkata.

DRI arrested three persons carrying the gold under provisions of the Customs Act of 1962, the statement said adding that further investigations are going on to unearth the kingpins of the smuggling racket.

In the current financial year so far, a total of 72 kilograms of gold had been seized by the agency in the eastern region, it said.
