10-year-old boy killed after school arch collapses on him

A 10-year-old boy today died following head injuries when an ornamental concrete arch at the entrance of a school near here collapsed on him, police said.
The arch fell on K Karthik, a fifth grade student, when he tried to open the iron gate beneath the arch at his village Panchayat Union Primary School in Vada Agaram, they said.
The arch came crashing down and struck the boy, killing him on the spot, they said.
"The arch was a 15-year-old structure and we are probing the mishap," Police Inspector, Marakkanam, G Chandrasekaran said.
The locals staged a protest seeking action against those responsible for maintenance of premises, they said.

"The boy belongs to a family living in indigent circumstances even without a house and authorities have been apprised about these things," police said.
