The bandh was called by the NC Hills Indigenous Student Forum (NCHISF) to press for bifurcation of Dima Hasao district and protest against renaming of NC Hills as Dima Hasao district.
Banks, commercial establishments and government offices remained closed and vehicles were off the road.
Schools and colleges were exempted from the purview of the bandh due to the ongoing HSLC and HS examinations in the state.
All passenger and goods trains running between Lumding and Badarpur in the hill section were affected due to the bandh and all night rail services were suspended, railway officials said.
