11-year-old K Harini poured kerosene over her body and set herself on fire in the toilet of the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Pernampet, about 60 km from here.
Some students, after hearing screams from a toilet alerted the school authorities. Immediately, she was rushed to a government hospital where she succumbed to burns, they said.
"The girl suffered 100 per cent burns and died even while she was being treated at a government hospital," Pernampet Police Inspector M T Iruthayaraj said.
"This child had concealed kerosene in a pet bottle and had poured it all over herself. Only certain portions of the foot was not burnt," Iruthayaraj said.
The motive behind her taking the extreme step was under investigation, he added.
