The 12-hour bandh called by a banned Khasi outfit, Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) today evoked mixed response even as the protest passed off peacefully.
While shops and big business establishments in the major commercial areas of Iewduh and Khyndailad in the capital city remained closed, small shops in different localities operated their business as usual, officials said.
Major markets in other parts of the state also remained closed.
Educational institutions remained closed except those conducting the promotional examination of Class XI, officials said.
Almost all central and state government offices including financial institutions were open, they said.
State-run and few private taxis were seen plying on the roads. The state transport buses were also running in different parts of the city, they added.
The HNLC has called for a 12-hour shutdown in six districts of the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region to protest alleged injustice to Christians in Delhi, lathi charge on truck drivers on NH-40 and delay in making last year's Mookhep police firing report public.
