The victims, five women and seven men, were travelling from Dhakuakhana in Lakhimpur district to Dergaon. Their vehicle collided with the heavily-loaded truck at Lotabari early this morning, killing 12 persons on the spot.
There were three couples among the victims, who have been identified as Deepankar and Moni Bora, Atul Bora and Pranati Bora, Probin and Runu Barua, Durba Dutta, Dharmeshwar Baruah, Sanjay Saikia, Lalit Das, Molani Bora and Manabi Bora.
The injured have been admitted to the Jorhat Medical College Hospital where their condition was stated to be critical.
The victims all hailed from three villages in Golaghat district and were returning from a religious congregation at Dhakuakhana.
