Roshan, studying in class 7 at Holy Cross Matriculation school at Udayarpatty, was playing 'hide and seek' with his classmates during the lunch break.
As his friends could not find him, they reported the matter to school authorities who launched a search and found him in the septic tank.
Police retrieved the body and sent it for post-mortem.
Distrct Chief Educational Officer and city police officials visited the school.
Police said they have registered a case and investigations were on with the school authorities.
