TMC activist Amitava Panja died in a Kolkata hospital where he was admitted with serious injuries after being attacked by alleged CPI(M) workers last night at Hatgovindapur village of Burdwan district, they said.
A mob attacked CPI(M) workers and set their houses on fire after Panja's death and blocked the Burdwan-Kalna road for more than two hours demanding arrest of the miscreants, they added.
Police initiated a search in the area and seized bows and arrows and other weapons before arresting the 16 persons.
