Altogether 1773 women have been killed in incidents related to rape, dowry and witch hunting in 12 years across Assam, the Assembly was informed today.
In a written reply to a query by Bodoland Peoples' Front (BPF) MLA Kamali Basumatary, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said 1773 women have lost their lives in cases related to rape, dowry and witch hunting in Assam between 2006 and March 23, 2018.
Replying on behalf of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who also holds the Home portfolio, Patowary said dowry related deaths accounted for 1606, while 53 women and 34 minor girls were raped and murdered during the period.
Witch hunting cases, which is based on superstition, claimed the lives of 80 women, he added.
