"We have arrested two youth - one main conspirator and the other executor," Inspector General of Police, Abdul Gani Mir told reporters here.
Mir identified the conspirator as Irshad Ahmad Wani alias Sunny, a resident of Wazir Bagh area of the city and his accomplice as Mohammad Omar Noor, a resident of Bemina locality here.
Sunny had planned to carry out the acid attack on the victim after his marriage proposal was turned down by her.
Sunny had obtained 40 litres of distilled water and two litres of concentrated Sulphuric Acid from a shop in Batamaloo. The accused then surveyed the spot of incident at least seven times to plan the attack down to the minutest detail.
Omar had borrowed his uncle's car to carry out the attack.
After carrying out the dastardly act, Omar returned home with his right hand receiving burn injuries. He cooked up a story of an accident. They both then fled the state, the IGP said.
Sunny's sustained interrogation led the police to Omar, whose family made him surrender.
"It was a challenging case for various reasons. It was a blind case as the victim was not in a position to tell us anything...Despite election process, we did not compromise on the case," The IGP said.
