With the arrest of two persons, police today claimed to have busted a gang of auto lifters allegedly involved in 300 incidents of car theft in South Delhi area.
According to police, Karan alias Kiran Nepali, 26, and and Dilshad alias Imran, 28 have been arrested and 10 stolen cars and one stolen motor cycle have been recovered so far.
The two were previously involved in 34 cases of motor vehicle thefts in the South District area, police alleged.
"In view of the sudden increase in the incidents of vehicles theft in South Delhi, several police teams were deployed to catch the lifters.
"On the intervening night of April 15 and 16 at a check-post in Sector-3 of R K Puram, a suspicious black colour Alto Car having UP registration number was spotted around 2.20 AM," Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) B S Jaiswal.
Jaiswal said that when the occupants of the car were asked to show documents, they fled from the spot.
Meanwhile, a PCR call was also received about the same Alto car being stolen.
"After a 10-km chase, the car was finally trapped in front of the Safdarjung Hospital and the driver was overpowered," said Jaiswal
During interrogation, Nepali allegedly disclosed that he had committed more than 35 vehicle thefts in the South District in the last three-four months.
He used to sell the stolen cars to his associate Imran who used to dismantle the stolen vehicles in Muzaffarnagar (Uttar Pradesh) and further dispose them, police said.
"On this information, the team conducted raids in Modinagar, Meerut and Muzaffarnagar in UP and arrested Imran. At the instance of both the accused, 10 stolen cars and one motor cycle were recovered from different places.
"Imran disclosed that he had dismantled and disposed of more than 100 cars so far with the help of a car scrap dealer Sahil in Muzaffarnagar. Further investigation is on to arrest co-accused Sahil," said the Police.
