The employees of Turamdih mine were cleaning slash accumulated in the mine when the mishap took place, said Sub-Divisional Officer (Dalbhum), Suraj Kumar.
Nine of the injured miners were admitted to Tata Main Hospital and they are in stable condition, he said.
The rescue operation of another person was on, Kumar said.
The Chairman and Managing Director of UCIL, Diwakar Acharya said the detail of the incident was being awaited.
Water had gushed in suddenly causing the mud to flow and trapping the miners, he said, adding that one Milan Karmakar and another miner were killed while seven to eight miners were rescued.
All of them were rushed to Tata Main Hospital, where they were admitted, he added.
Chief Minister Raghubar Das expressed grief at the incident, an official release said, adding he assured the families of the injured all possible help.
