20-yr-old girl raped, murdered; accused held

A case of alleged rape and subsequent murder of a 20-year-old girl has come to light here with police arresting a 30-year-old driver in this connection who has confessed to having been in a romantic relationship with the victim.
According to police, a semi-clad body of a girl bearing strangulation marks around the neck was yesterday recovered in the Isasani area here.
A bag containing some books was found near the body. The victim's identity was established on the basis of the names written on the books, they said.
Thereafter, a joint team of Crime Branch and Sonegaon police arrested Jeevan Ajabrao Chhapne. The accused has confessed to the crime, they added.

The accused has claimed that he was in a relationship with the girl.
He said that, on September 15, he had taken the victim to an isolated spot in an inebriated state and sexually assaulted her. He had then strangled her to death and dumped the body there, police added.
A case has been registered under Section 376A and 302 of IPC, police said, adding that further inquiries are on into the case.
