Nearly 200 employees of Indian export and import agencies have got stranded after being caught up in the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh has witnessed waves of violence by fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing since one of the top party leaders was sentenced to death by a court on Thursday for war crimes during the country's liberation war.
Superintendent of Police Prasun Banerjee, after visiting the zero point and holding a meeting with BSF officers, said "there has been problem in the border areas of Bangladesh and we are trying to bring the stranded people with the help of BSF."
The export and import at Mohdipur land port in Malda district has been totally stopped, officials said.
An office-bearer of Association of Exporters and Importers Samir Ghosh said 400 trucks with 800 employees (drivers and helpers) had gone to Bangladesh and 200 of them are still in the neighbouring country.
