Residents of Ludhiana will soon get relief from the menace of stray dogs as city Municipal Corporation will start the much awaited 'Stray Dog Sterilisation' project next month, which aims to sterilise a whopping 25,000 dogs in next two years.
The Rs 2 crore project has been given to a Hyderabad based company - Vets Society for Animal Welfare and Rural Development.
Under the project, which will start from February 15, 25,000 stray dogs would be sterilised in a period of two years, said Amarjit Singh Sekhon, Joint Commissioner (Sanitation and Health), Ludhiana Municipal Corporation in an official release.
Sekhon said a veterinary hospital has been specially set up for this project on Hambran road here.
"This hospital comprises of an operation theatre, three rooms and 20 kennels. The work of this hospital is almost ready and only final touches are going on," he said.
The officials from Vets Society for Animal Welfare and Rural Development visited the newly constructed veterinary hospital few days back and approved it.
Sekhon said the stray dogs would be sterilised using the conventional technique approved by Animal Welfare Board of India and added the company has been asked to sterilise 1,200 dogs per month.
Ludhiana Municipal Corporation's Veterinary Doctor Y P Singh, said that once a stray dog is sterilised, the company would carry out ear-notching (a V shape cut on the dog's ear) for keeping a record of sterilisations.
The project will start from a particular pocket and will cover the entire city in a phased manner.
Ghanshyam Thori, Additional Commissioner, Ludhiana MC, said that the city residents would heave a sigh of relief from the menace of stray dogs once the project starts.
He said the dog sterilisation project would be carried out in a transparent manner and that they would make sure the dogs are not harmed in any manner during the process.
