Three men have been arrested for allegedly carrying out robberies in houses by pretending to be keymakers, the police said today.
With their arrest, the police claimed to have worked out nine cases of house thefts reported from the areas of west, northwest, central Delhi and Rohini.
On September 26, it was learnt that three gang members would be coming near the Shivaji Park Metro Station to meet someone, the police said.
A trap was laid at the traffic intersection on Rohtak Road near the metro station and Narender (27), Gurbir Singh (40) and Parkash Singh (23) were arrested, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vijay Kumar said.
The gang members used to come to Delhi by train, stay in a budget hotel in Paharganj and roam in residential areas posing as keymakers.
When they were called in to repair locks, they would steal valuables from the almirah and intentionally jam the lock so that the house owner would not be able to open it, he said.
They would then leave the house either on the pretext of bringing other tools or to call their colleagues for help.
If they were successful in stealing valuables, they would leave the city otherwise they would stay here for at least for 15-20 days.
They would leave their hotel in the morning in pairs and return by 6-7 pm. If any of the members did not return to the hotel by 8 pm, the others would check out so that they are not caught by the police, the officer said.
Gurbir was declared a proclaimed offender in two cases registered in Amar Colony and Hauz Qazi respectively. Parkash was also declared a proclaimed offender in a case registered at Subzi Mandi police station.
