Mahato, the face of the Lalgarh movement in West Bengal and convenor of the Maoists-backed Peoples Committee Against Police Atrocities, and five others were sentenced to life imprisonment on May 12 by a West Midnapore court under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for their alleged links with Maoists.
"Niranjan Bera, a resident of Lodhashuli area of Jhargram and Jiten Giri and Sunil Barik, both residents of Rohini area of Sankrail were arrested for putting up posters demanding the release of Chhhatradhar Mahato, who has been sentenced under UAPA," said a senior police officer of Jhargram police station.
