The clash took place near Kalna Gate when TMC workers under the leadership of local Councillor Md Salim were on their way to attend a civic body programme, while CPI-M workers were arranging for a meeting for the December 21 rally in Kolkata, police said.
While nobody was injured in the clash, 30 persons, belonging to both CPI(M) and TMC were arrested immediately after the incident, they said.
Md Salim managed to elude police initially but was finally apprehended this evening, a police official said.
RAF and police personnel were rushed to the area and the situation was brought under control. A police picket has been posted in view of the prevailing tension in the area, police said.
