Forty cases of crimes against women are registered every day in the national capital with offences of rape, molestation and sexual harassment in public topping the list.
According to Delhi Police data, there has been 16 per cent increase in registration of crimes against women in the city with 11,683 such cases being lodged between January 1 and October 20 against 10,064 cases registered during the same period last year.
Police attributed the rise in crime statistics to effective registration of cases after the December 16, 2012 gangrape incident. Recording of such incidents saw an almost 500 per cent rise.
Also, gender sensitisation programmes organised for the police personnel have played a vital role, they said.
One of the key takeaways from the December 16 incident was that cases were earlier not registered due to reluctance on part of the victim and also at times on part of policemen.
"It was mandated by an amendment in the year 2013 and also after a lot of debate that if a woman comes to a police station, she will not be denied registration of an FIR if she reports a cognisable offence," Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi had said.
Apart from that, there has been an increased awareness among women as previously fewer women would turn up at the police stations to file complaints.
Till Oct 20 this year, Delhi has recorded over 3,450 cases of molestation, 1,024 cases of eve-teasing and 2,563 cases as against 2,544, 793 and 2,553 cases last year.
There has also been a rise in number of abductions and dowry deaths with 311 and 131 cases registered this year respectively against 253 and 123 cases last year.
However, registration of domestic violence cases has shown a slide with 2,370 recorded this year compared to 2,457 last year.
According to police, almost 90 per cent of the cases registered in the last nine months had been solved and the culprits have been arrested.
