The Jammu and Kashmir Police has provided a financial assistance of over Rs 25 lakh to 583 police wards under various scholarship schemes during the current financial year in the state, Director General of State Police Ashok Prasad has said.
"During the current year till date more than Rs 25 lakh have been sanctioned and distributed among 583 police wards as assistance under various scholarship schemes," Prasad said chairing a meeting convened to review scholarship schemes for police wards here yesterday.
He said this include meritorious scholarships for 195 wards of serving police personnel, 41 school going children of deceased personnel and 93 wards of 'martyrs', who laid down their lives fighting militancy in the state.
Prasad said nine wards, who have qualified competitive examinations or secured position in national sports events, have also been benefited under the scheme, besides 121 wards of serving police personnel have been rewarded for their excellent performance in academics.
"Welfare of police wards is one of the top most priorities of the organisation to infuse spirit of competition among them and boost their morale," the DGP said.
He said various welfare schemes have been introduced to inspire police wards towards the quality education enabling to compete in competitive examinations and sports events.
He said the organisation, realising its responsibility to help the families of martyrs, has been providing scholarship to their school going children enabling them to continue their education.
In the Police Public Schools established at range headquarters in the state, these wards are provided free education with hostel facilities, he said.
