The storm accompanied by heavy rainfall struck the Pynthor - Demseiniong and Umpling areas in the city and also in Nongpathaw village, district magistrates on duty said.
"Seven persons sustained minor injuries in the incident of natural calamity and over 150 homes including a school and a church have been affected," East Khasi Hills District Deputy Commissioner P S Dkhar told PTI.
He said 350 persons from 87 families including a school building in Pynthor-Demseiniong area were affected in the storm, which lasted for less than a minute blowing away roofs and uprooting trees and electric poles.
Affected people were given immediate relief and blankets, he said.
The Block Development Officers have been directed to submit assessment reports on the damage caused by the storm," the DC added.
