"So far no casualty has been reported. A general alert has been sounded in the area," Pravin Bakshi, West Garo Hills district administrator, told PTI.
Supply of relief materials and essential commodities to the affected people has already started and around 15 camps was also set up to provide temporary shelter to the homeless.
According to estimates, around 75,000 people were rendered homeless due to the back flow of water in the Brahmaputra in Assam and Jingiram river in Meghalaya submerging hundreds of villages including government schools and police outposts in Phulbari, Rajabala, Nollbari, Islampur, Bakshi said.
Over 14,500 houses in the affected areas were either completely under water or were partly submerged and was unfit and unsafe to use, he said.
Life boats have been procured from the security agencies in the area, including the BSF and the Home Guards, and some were already put in service to evacuate people stranded on their rooftops, officials said, adding that so far no casualty was reported.
The flood situation remains grim even as there are no reports of further rise in water level till late Sunday evening, officials said.
