Dhemaji district Superintendent of police Swapnanlil Deka said more than 12 persons were traveling in the boat when it suddenly capsized at around 10.30 AM at Ananda Nagar Bamghat area, about 70 km from Dhemaji town.
The infant drowned, he said, adding the mother was rescued.
The body of the infant was later recovered, Deka said, adding nine persons either swam to safety or were rescued by locals or the State Disaster Response Force.
Investigation into the capsize is on and the cause for it is yet to be ascertained, he added.
