Alleging callousness on the part of the State election commission, a city-based Aam Aadmi Party worker wrote a letter to the President of India here today, urging him to postpone election dates in Gujarat, where polls for 26 seats are to be held tomorrow.
"Postpone the polls, since the election machinery and Gujarat police are seemingly biased in their approach. These authorities have violated rules and proven to be disobedient towards provisions of law under the Constitution of India," AAP worker Nishant Verma said in a letter to the President.
"Depute emergency observers from your end to see at least what best can be done on polling day, if the date is not changed, to at least attempt free and fair elections," Verma demanded.
The AAP worker said that despite EC rules, neither the state election officer nor police authorities issued a special number through which the public could complain about misuse of Short Message Services (SMS).
"For objectionable SMS messages which violate rules, authorities should advertise special cellular phone numbers through which the receiver of such SMSes can forward these along with the sender's number," he said, referring to an Election Commission letter.
"Today SMS service is a basic medium of communication between citizens of the country. How can the election machinery and the Gujarat police be so careless and not abide by laid down norms," Verma asked in his letter.
He also demanded setting up of a legal committee to take action against irresponsible officers.
"Our state level SMS nodal officer is Raghvendra Vatsa. After his transfer to Panchmahal, Sujata Majumdar, SP CID Crime, was appointed and her number has been publicised by the DGP's office," Chief Electoral Officer Anita Karwal said.
