Keeping in mind the Holy month of Ramadan, the West Bengal government today said they would ply AC buses in four busy routes.
Special AC Volvo buses would at least make four trips a day in the busy routes of Garden Reach-Furfura Sharif, Park Circus-Tikiapara and Kamarhati-Tiljala, West Bengal transport minister Madan Mitra said today flagging off 12 buses near Netaji Indoor Stadium.
Similar type of service would also be made available during Durga Puja, he said.
Mitra said as per the West Bengal government's contract with Volvo, Ashok Leyland and Tata Motors they would flag off at least 10 buses every week.
The West Bengal government expects to have its full fleet ready by November to meet the transport woes.
"By Eid, we're planning to have at least 100 buses in the three mentioned routes. We're also planning to bring in buses from other routes to meet the heavy rush during the month of Ramadan," Mitra told reporters.
After the festival, they West Bengal transport department would restructure the routes as per demand, Mitra said.
"We should have our full fleet ready by November and we hope the transport woes would then be a matter of past."
The target is to cut down on the over dependence on private transporters, Mitra said.
Asked about the long pending demand to hike the bus fares, Mitra said a committee had been formed to assess the situation.
"They would review the transport structure in all the major cities in India and give a comparative report. We will work out on basis of that.
