Hundreds of activists from over 40 NGOs and civil society today gathered at Jantar Mantar here, appealing to end an environment of alleged war-mongering and jingoism in the country and strive for peace.
"We gathered here to send out a message that the climate of war-mongering has taken over the country post the Uri attack in Kashmir and the subsequent military stance by India. We need to be wary of that and go for peace," alleged Shabnam Hashmi of Anhad, one of the co-organisers.
Besides, Amhad, AIDWA, AIPF, AISA, All India Catholic Association, IPTA Delhi, SFI, Pehchan, NAPM and other organistions also participated in the event -- Citizens Joint Action Against War Mongering.
Former Navy chief Admiral (retd) Lakshminarayan Ramdas, author Achin Vanaik, activists Medha Patkar and Kavita Krishnan, Prabir Purkayastha, among others, spoke on the occasion.
"Admiral Ramdas said that no one likes a war-like situation. And, we should certainly be wary of it," Leena Dabiru of Dwarka Collective, one of the organiser said.
"We are already running a campaign on the theme on Facebook, and today also poets, artists and musicians came together to send out the message of peace and love," she said.
