Actor Bikram Chatterjee, arrested on charges of unintentionally causing death of co-passenger and model Sonika Chauhan in a road mishap which he met while driving allegedly under influence, moved court for bail today.
Chatterjee moved the court of Alipore's Additional District Judge S Sengupta for bail, a day after Kolkata police filed a chargesheet against the actor.
Chatterjee has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, besides the rash driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and causing grievous hurt and mischief, said a senior officer of Kolkata police, quoting charges on which actor was indicted in the chargesheet.
The judge deferred the hearing on Chatterjee's bail plea till July 26 after his counsel Anirban Guha Thakurta sought its adjournment, stating that they were yet to get a copy of the chargesheet filed by the prosecution yesterday.
The chargesheet against Chatterjee has cited around 40 witnesses, eight of whom had recorded their statements before a judicial magistrate.
Besides Vikram and Sonika's friends, other witnesses include KMC conservancy worker, a taxi driver, said another officer.
Chatterjee was arrested on July 6 midnight on the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder or unintentional killing. Chatterjee's car had hit the pavement in high speed in the wee hours of April 29 on Rasbehari Avenue killing co- passenger Sonika Chauhan, a model.
