AIIMS probe into unauthorised persons carrying out blood tests

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has ordered an inquiry into allegations that blood platelet count tests in its laboratory were being done by laboratory and hospital attendants, who are just matriculates.
The inquiry is being conducted by a four-member committee under the chairmanship of Dr N K Mehra, Head of the Department of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics.
Head of Lab Medicines Dr A K Mukhopadhayay, however, said blood tests are being done on automated machines under the supervision of laboratory technicians and doctors.
As per AIIMS rules and regulations, laboratory or hospital attendants are not authorised to carry out such tests or operate such sensitive cell-counting machines.
According to the AIIMS manual, the person who can conduct such tests need to be laboratory technician and minimum requirement for people doing such tests needs to have bachelors of Science with Medical laboratory technology.
