Ajmer presents a perfect example of the harmonious living of the oldest inhabitants of Sunni and Shia sects in the Indian subcontinent, reflecting a high-level of tolerance.
Muslim clerics say the city has never witnessed any incidents of violence between members of the two sects and the level of harmony is high.
The members of Shia and Sunni sects attend each other's ceremony of burial or submerging of Tazia, spreading the message of harmony.
"There is no conflict or difference between Shia and Sunni Muslims in Ajmer and we observe the occasion very peacefully," Muzaffar Bharti, a Sunni member, told PTI.
"Historical accounts say that this is the oldest colony of Shia and Sunni Muslims in Indian sub-continent living from past 800 years. Shias and Sunnis are living here with harmony and there is no conflict," he said.
Bharti said Tazia processions of Sunni Muslims are carried out in places like Langarkhana, Khadim Mohalla and Andarkot, whereas Shias bury it at Taragarh.
Mohammad Irfan, a Shia cleric, expressed similar sentiments saying that it was an exemplary thing.
Muharram is observed by Muslims to mourn the death of Imam Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad in the battle of Karbala.
SP Ajmer Mahendra Singh said there has been no clash between Shia and Sunni and they observe the day peacefully.
"There is no dispute or issue between Shia and Sunni in Ajmer and they observe the occasion without any conflict. They have separate routes and separate places for the ceremonies," he said.
Shia people live atop Taragarh hill whereas the population of Sunni Muslim population is around the world famous shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti.
