The 60-year-old victim, Ramdevi, lived with her two sons, Umesh and Ramlakhan. Late last night, Ramlakhan attacked her with an axe after she refused to give him money to buy liquor.
She sustained injuries on the head and her hands were also chopped off, SSP (rural) Surendra Tiwari said.
The neighbours overpowered Ramlakhan after hearing his mother's cries and informed the police following which he was arrested, he said.
Umesh told police that his brother was an alcoholic and used fight at home often over money for liquor.
